Periwinkle “Perry” Belvedere

Elizabeth Sinclair

Serge Alexander Storms (A.K.A. Muntjack “Jack” Pimento)

Last seen in The Stingray Shuffle; appears in Cadillac Beach in between Orange Crush’s Chapter 40 and Epilogue; and appears in Torpedo Juice after Orange Crush’s Epilogue. Serge currently suffering from long-term amnesia and is living in Tallahassee under the name Jack Pimento.  As Pimento, he is Marlon Conrad’s press secretary, and, later, becomes a member of Marlon’s campaign staff.  He is six-feet tall; weighs one hundred sixty pounds; ice blue eyes; and sports a military-style haircut, which shows off the flecks of gray in his temples.

Bumper Sticker Killer

A young Brazilian woman (actual name unrevealed).  She is in Florida to seek revenge on the individuals responsible for facilitating the exile of her rapist and tormentor, “Loco Benny,” the notorious head of Brazil’s secret police.  Her nickname originates from the fact she uses a black Magic Marker to leave pithy, darkly humorous, messages on her victims’ bare chests.  Raised in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, she developed an addiction to huffing glue as a way of coping with her hunger from lack of food.  As a young girl, she was captured by the secret police and sent to Loco Benny’s countryside villa to be sexually exploited.  Escaping Loco Benny’s clutches, and completely disenfranchised with the Brazilian government, she joined up with a band of guerillas.  She left for the United States when she learned the CIA whisked their ally, and her old tormentor, out of Brazil and set him up in a posh new life in Miami.  This attractive and lethal killer is twenty-two years old; five feet eight inches; thin build; has black hair in a pixie-cut style; and has a beauty mark on her right cheek.

Speaker of the House Gomer Tatum

The Florida Democrat Party’s nomination for governor, and Marlon’s opponent in the 2002 election.  Tatum’s main goal in politics is to avoid messy entanglements and to stay below the radar.  He lives comfortably off the favors and gifts from the people and lobbyists who wish to buy his vote and influence.  Tatum is currently in a romantic relationship with the politically-ambitious, Jackie Monroeville.  He is fifty-eight years old; overweight and slovenly; and has thinning black hair.

Albert Fresco

Blaine Crease

Last seen in Hammerhead Ranch Motel; appears next in Cadillac Beach as the co-anchor of Action Five News out of Miami. Aside from his regular duties as Florida Cable News’ intrepid reporter, Blaine is also the moderator for the gubernatorial debates.

Agent Mahoney (A.K.A. Detective Mahoney)

First literary appearance; last seen in Triggerfish Twist; appears in Cadillac Beach in between Orange Crush’s Chapter 40 and Epilogue; and then appears in Hurricane Punch after Orange Crush’s Epilogue.  Having left the Florida Department of Law Enforcement at the end of Triggerfish Twist, Mahoney is currently a homicide investigator with the Miami-Dade Metro Police.  Mahoney is tall in height and is usually seen wearing an unkempt-looking tweed jacket.  He is said to have blue eyes in Shark Skin Suite (27: 199).  It is revealed in Electric Barracuda he was raised by Mable Mahoney. Based on the information in Electric Barracuda, it can be concluded Mahoney is currently in his early forties.

Babs Belvedere

Perry’s daughter and Marlon’s fiancée.  She is a Miss Tallahassee and the runner-up for Miss Florida.  She is skilled in ventriloquism and puppetry.  Babs exhibits very childlike qualities and is prone to impulsiveness.  Yet she is also extremely loyal and possesses a bubbly personality.  Aside from her obvious beauty, not much is known about her physical appearance other than she is a blonde.

Governor Horace Birch

The Florida’s Republican governor elected in 1998. Birch’s term of office is tragically cut short when he dies in a plane crash while on a lobbyist-sponsored junket to Alaska.  He is survived by a widow.  Birch is friends with Dempsey Conrad and Perry Belvedere.

Dempsey “Tip” Conrad

Marlon’s father and the current Florida Republican Party chairman.  A son of legendary U.S. congressman “Two-fisted” Thaddeus Conrad, Dempsey made his fortune in the barbell manufacturing business before serving as the state’s attorney general.  As his current title suggests, Dempsey is a very powerful figure in Florida politics.  He is friends with Governor Birch and influential lobbyist, Perry Belvedere.

Jackie Monroeville

A young woman from rural Florida with ambitions of becoming the state’s next first lady.  She is in a romantic relationship with Speaker of the House and Democrat gubernatorial challenger, Gomer Tatum.  Jackie is a highly motivated individual, who has a natural talent for maneuvering through the world of politics.  She is twenty-four years old; five feet eleven inches tall; attractive; and has a freckled-face reminiscent of actress Sissy Spacek.

Anita Braintree (A.K.A. Anita Sirocco; A.K.A. Angela Sirocco)

George Braintree’s widowed trophy wife.  Shortly after her husband’s death, Anita marries his business partner, Frank Sirocco.

Frank Lloyd Sirocco

A Florida death-row inmate slated for the electric chair for the murder of George Braintree.  Before Braintree’s murder, Sirocco and Braintree were business partners.  They owned the Boston-based Clean Sweep, Inc. – a crime scene restoration and clean-up company.  Sirocco is currently married to his deceased partner’s widow, Anita.

Benito Juárez “Loco Benny” Pecadillo

As the head of Brazil’s notorious secret police, Loco Benny is known to have been engaged in numerous criminal and deplorable activities, including the rounding-up underage girls from the slums of Rio de Janeiro to use as sex slaves for him and his officers.  His criminal actions were brought to the attention of Amnesty International.  However, he was whisked out of Brazil and placed into comfortable exile in Miami by his friends in the CIA before he could be brought to justice.

Tex Jackson

The Army Reserves sergeant-major who serves as the de facto leader of Marlon’s platoon while on the peace-keeping mission in Kosovo.  After enlisting in the Reserves at the age of thirty-five, Tex’s natural born leadership qualities emerged.  He quickly earned the reputation of being a decisive leader who is protective of the men under his command.  Currently forty-nine years old, Tex is African-American; lives in Clewiston; is six feet tall; has a thin physique; and a tooth-gapped grin.

Marlon’s Army Reserves platoon

Along with Marlon and Tex Jackson, this nine-member platoon of Floridians includes: Lech Kluzinski, a corporal from De Funiak Springs; Roosevelt Washington, an African-American reservist from Riviera Beach; Enrico Marconi, an Italian-American who lives in Arcadia with his wife and two children; Dino Schwartz, the platoon’s crooner from Indiantown; Fulgencio Zapata, a Cuban-American from Homestead; Francois Bordeaux, a reservist from Sebring, FL; and Hank “Vinegar Bend” Fulbright, a resident from Inverness.

The Overtown Posse

A four-man street gang comprised of Roosevelt Washington’s cousins.

Wally Butts

A journalism professor hired by Marlon to investigate the state’s upcoming death row cases.

Jack Savage

First actual appearance; last seen on a billboard in Florida Roadkill.  No further appearances to date.

Joe Blow

A Tampa man who lives up to his name by the fact his lifestyle, preferences, opinions, etc. are all uncanny bellwethers to where the majority of the nation’s population is leaning.  As a result, he is harassed by media and prognosticators of public opinion every election year.

Jenny Springs

A rising tennis star who mysteriously disappeared from the spotlight years ago.  She is currently a dolphin trainer at Marineland.  Jenny is befriended by Marlon and his campaign staff.  As a result of a past trauma, she is extremely shy and speaks with a stutter.  Jenny is almost six feet tall; one hundred and forty pounds; athletically fit; and has dark hair, cut in a short, tomboyish style.

DAY-TRADR

Jenny Springs’ abusive and domineering ex-boyfriend.  His actual name is not revealed.  His nickname comes from his Ferrari’s vanity license plate.

Ned Ingmar Coppola

A skilled television commercial director, Ned is widely considered to be the “King of the thirty-second political TV spots.”  A distant step-cousin of Francis Ford Coppola, Ned’s greatest desire is to break into directing Hollywood films.  He currently owns the Miami-based Eagle Studios.  Ned is tall; lean and tanned; and has dark hair styled in a shaggy cut.

Overview of the Timeline

NOTE - The novel's hardcover edition was used for the (Chapter : Page) notations

Most of the events in Orange Crush occur during the final weeks leading up to the 2002 Florida gubernatorial election.  However, there are a couple of key events which occur prior to the election thatare important to the framing of the timeline.  Working backwards in chronological order, they are: Governor Birch’s death; Marlon’s time in Kosovo; and when Jack Pimento (Serge) is hired to work in the lieutenant governor’s mailroom.

Days after Governor Birch is declared dead, Perry Belvedere states Birch’s death will mean Marlon will be running as an incumbent in “five months” (14: 117).  This means Governor Birch’s death and Marlon’s swearing-in as the new governor both occur around the beginning of June 2002.

On the same day which Perry makes his comment about Marlon’s future incumbency, he also mentions Marlon took his “little funeral tour last month” (14: 117).  Perry states this around the beginning of June, which means Marlon visits the family members of his comrades sometime in May 2002.  From this, it can be established Marlon’s tour of duty in Kosovo most likely occurred about a month before, in April 2002.

The epilogue in The Stingray Shuffle establishes the amnesia-suffering Serge is living among the Rhesus monkeys on Key Lois as late as January 1998.  At some point, years later, he resurfaces in Tallahassee as “Jack Pimento” and gets a job in the lieutenant governor’s mailroom.  After working inthe mailroom for a “month” (8: 68), Serge/Pimento is promoted to the public affairs office.  By “the summer of 2001” (6: 47), he is Marlon’s press secretary.  It is assumed Serge/Pimento is hired in the mailroom around July 2001.  His promotion to the public affairs office occurs in August.  He is further promoted to press secretary in September.  This means there is an unaccounted-for gap of about three and a half years (from January 1998 to July 2001) in Serge’s timeline.

Orange Crush Timeline

“I usually hate it when some show-off wrecks a perfectly good linear story by jumbling the chronology.” – Serge A. Storms, The Big Bamboo (2: 38)

                                                   MONDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2000

Helmut von Zeppelin boasts his new NFL team, the Florida Felons, will bring a championship to Florida within three years. (4: 32-33)

  • The announcement of the formation of the Florida Felons NLF expansion team occurs in “late 2000”. (4: 32)
  • Von Zeppelin vows to have the Florida Felons stadium “constructed in time for the 2002 season”.  In fact, von Zeppelin has the stadium up-and-running for the 2001 NFL season. This is established by the fact that, when Marlon Conrad attends the Felons game against the Dallas Cowboy and meets von Zeppelin for the first time, Governor Birch is still alive. Upon Birch’s death, Marlon assumed the governor’s office “five months” (14: 117) before the 2002 election.  Therefore, Birch’s death occurs sometime around May 2002, which is well before the 2002 NFL season. (4: 33)

                                                   THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 2001

Von Zeppelin attends his first NFL team owner’s meeting. (4: 34)

                                                      SUNDAY, AUGUST 12, 2001

Thanks to the Felons’ poor performance on the field, Von Zeppelin is forced to flee the stadium when an angry mob of fans attack his owner’s box. (4: 35-38)

  • The Florida Felons’ first game is against the “Pittsburgh Steelers”.  It is assumed this is the first game of the NFL’s 2001 preseason, which began on Sunday, August 12, 2001.  In reality, the Steelers had a “bye” week on Week 1 of the NFL’s preseason. (4: 36)
  • Since “sunlight” can be seen through the windows of von Zeppelin’s stadium owner’s box, the Felons game against the Steelers occurs during the daytime. (4: 36)

                                                MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2001

Lieutenant Governor Marlon Conrad attempts to explain to a group of outraged African-Americans his reasoning for gutting Florida’s Affirmative Action laws. (6: 47-51)

  • NOTE: This is the earliest chronological appearance of Serge Storms (A.K.A. Jack Pimento) in this novel.

                                                 TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2001

Gottfried Escrow dismisses an investigative journalist’s claim that Marlon is not registered with the Selective Service. (10: 74-75)

  • It is a “warm September evening just after sunset” when the reporter confronts Escrow about Marlon’s failure to sign up with the Selective Service.  Therefore, the question of Marlon’s status with the Selective Service is first raised in September 2001. (10: 74)

                                                WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2001

Escrow is hounded by the reporter to produce Marlon’s Selective Service records. (10: 75)

  • The reporter follows-up on his investigation by calling Escrow “the next day”. (10: 75)

                                                   FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2001

Marlon enlists in the Army Reserves. (10: 75-76)

  • After “ten days” of the reporter’s persistent phone calls, Escrow decides the controversy over Marlon’s failure to register with the Selective Service needs to be dealt with. (10: 75)
  • Governor Birch, Dempsey Conrad and Perry Belvedere are called away from a “weekend spokesmodel summit” to deal with the growing scandal regarding Marlon’s failure to register with the Selective Service. (10: 75)
  • Marlon is scheduled to serve “two weeks of active duty” in the reserves. (10: 76)

                                                    TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2001

Marlon beings to wonders how he can get out of marrying Babs Belvedere (1: 15-20)

  • Marlon answers charges about cronyism during a press conference in the “fall of 2001, exactly twelve months” prior to the debate in Tallahassee. (1: 15)
  • It is a “calm October afternoon” the day Marlon responds to the charges of cronyism. (1: 15)

                                                      SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2001

  • Marlon meets Helmut von Zeppelin for the first time at the Florida Felons game against the Dallas Cowboys.  The meeting occurs “a week after” Marlon completed his Army Reserves training. (10: 76)
  • The Felons/Cowboy football game is an “afternoon” game. (10: 79)
  • In reality, the Dallas “Cowboys” had a bye week on Sunday, October 22, 2001.  Therefore, it is assumed this is the date for the Cowboys game with the Felons. (10: 79)

                                                  THURSDAY, JANUARY 24, 2002

Pimento briefs Marlon on Frank Lloyd Sirocco’s death row case, and how Sirocco is up for execution for the murder of his business partner, George Braintree. (6: 51-52 & 7: 53-57)

  • Pimento’s report on the death penalty occurs “after lunch on a Thursday”. (6: 51)
  • “Six months before the 2002 gubernatorial debates got underway”, Sirocco was transferred to the Florida State Prison in preparation for his execution. (7: 63)

Marlon orders Pimento to take a drug test. (8: 64-67)

                                                     TUESDAY, JANAURY 29, 2002

After learning the drug test found traces of both depression and bipolar disorder medications in Pimento’s system, Escrow begins to worry Marlon might find out he forgot to run a background check on Pimento before hiring him. (8: 67-69)

  • At the point in which he is ordered to take a drug test, Pimento had “begun his government career six months earlier.”  Since he was press secretary in the “summer of 2001” (6: 47), it is assumed Pimento gives his report on Sirocco’s case in January 2002. (8: 68)
  • After getting a job in the capitol mailroom, Pimento is promoted to the “public affairs office a month later”.  Since he is press secretary in the “summer of 2001” (6: 47), it is assumed he began working in the mailroom in July 2001, was promoted to the public affairs office in August 2001, and then promoted to press secretary around September 2001. (8: 68)

                                                    TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2002

The state psychiatrist informs Marlon that Pimento is suffering from amnesia but is otherwise completely harmless and able to resume his duties. (8: 69-70)

  • The state psychiatrist visits Marlon’s office to discuss her findings regarding Pimento “one week” after Marlon and Escrow discuss the results of Pimento’s drug test. (8: 69)

Alone in his apartment, Pimento is haunted by disturbing images from his pre-amnesia past. (8: 70)

  • While Marlon is learning from the state psychiatrist that his press secretary is suffering from amnesia, Pimento is in his apartment watching Taxi Driver for the “fourteenth time in as many days”. (8: 70)

                                                          FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 2002

Shortly after the Bumper Sticker Killer’s flight lands at Miami International, Mahoney is called to the scene to investigate the murder of one of the passengers.  While inspecting the corpse, he finds the killer wrote a humorous message in Magic Marker on the victim’s chest. (9: 71-73)

  • “The sun was setting” as the Bumper Sticker Killer’s flight makes its approach to Miami. (9: 71)
  • Mahoney’s comment about taking “the Cowboys and points at home” should be seen as an off-handed remark, and not an indication it is currently the NFL season.  His comment comes on the heels of the Bumper Sticker Killer’s arrival in Miami, which occurs shortly before she kills Loco Benny.  Loco Benny’s death occurs shortly before Marlon is called to duty in Kosovo, which occurs during the spring of 2002. (9: 73)

The Willie Nelson Bandit attempts to carjack the Bumper Sticker Killer.  Hours later, Mahoney is called to the gruesome murder scene and finds another quirky message written across the carjacker’s chest. (11: 80-82)

                                                    SATURDAY, MARCH 30, 2002

The Bumper Sticker Killer murders one of Loco Benny’s bodyguards at a trendy South Beach nightclub.  Later, while investigating the murder at the club, Mahoney discovers another message written in Magic Marker across the victim’s chest. (11: 82-86)

  • Loco Benny leaves the Rash nightclub at “two” A.M. (11: 82)
  • Loco Benny returns to his villa on Star Island “shortly after midnight”.  However, it must be after “two” (11: 82) in the morning, since that is when he departed for home from the Rash. (11: 85)

Mahoney investigates Loco Benny’s murder.  Seeing another one of the Magic Marker messages scrawled on Loco Benny’s chest, Mahoney concludes he’s dealing with a serial killer. (11: 86-87)

  • Mahoney visits the unnamed café on Ocean Drive “just before dawn”. (11: 86)

                                                        MONDAY, APRIL 1, 2002

Marlon’s Reserve unit is activated for a peace-keeping mission in Kosovo.  Marlon balks at the idea of going overseas.  However, he rethinks his position when it occurs to him the mission will further delay his wedding to Babs. (11: 87-90)

  • The Miami Herald’s article connecting Loco Benny’s hacienda on Star Island to the shell company Marlon was the director of is published “after the discovery of” Loco Benny’s body.  This means the Bumper Sticker Killer arrives in Florida before Marlon’s tour of duty in Kosovo, which is months prior to the first gubernatorial debate in Tallahassee. (11: 88)

Kicked out of the house by his wife, Mahoney gets a room at a fleabag motel. (17: 128-129)

  • Mahoney falls asleep at the Gulfstream Inn before “Letterman came on”.  Therefore, this scene occurs on a weekday. (17: 129)

                                                        FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2002

Reading the Miami Herald, the Bumper Sticker Killer learns the CIA used companies connected to Marlon to facilitate Loco Benny’s asylum.  Realizing her revenge is not yet complete, she makes plans to travel to Tallahassee. (17: 129-132)

  • Mahoney is awoken at “three A.M.” by the Bumper Sticker Killer’s nightmare. (17: 129)
  • The Bumper Sticker Killer had a “busy week, coming in from the airport and all”.  It is assumed this scene occurs a week after her arrival on Friday, March 29, 2002. (17: 130)
  • Since Loco Benny is referred to as the “late Benito Pecadillo”, it can be assumed the Bumper Sticker Killer has already killed him by the time Mahoney checks into the Gulfstream Inn. (17: 132)
  • The Herald’s article containing the graph connecting Brazilian military human-rights violator Loco Benny to the top of the Florida’s political structure has “Governor Conrad” at the top of the pyramid.  This would seem to indicate Marlon is currently the governor.  However, this cannot be the case because the article is published the same day Marlon, still lieutenant governor, is called to duty in Kosovo. (17: 132)
  • After reading the Herald’s article, the Bumper Sticker Killer gets on the phone to check “flight times for Tallahassee”.  This would seem to indicate the Bumper Sticker Killer’s murder of Todd Vanderbilt during the first gubernatorial debate is soon to follow; however, the debate is a full six-and-a-half months away. (17: 132)

                                                     TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 2002

While waiting in the Albanian air base, Marlon concludes the other Floridians in his platoon are a bunch of small-town losers. (11: 90-93)

  • After arriving at the Albania air base, Marlon and the other GIs sit idle for “two weeks”. (11: 91)

                                                       FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 2002

After days of patrolling the countryside, Marlon becomes bored and cedes his command over to Sergeant Major Tex Jackson.  As they bivouac for the night outside the village of Suva Prizka, Marlon continues to treat his fellow soldiers with snobbish contempt. (11: 93-95)

  • At the time they are approached by the old man, who takes their photograph with Marlon’s camera, Marlon’s unit has spent “three days marching through the Balkans”.  This means it has been three days since Marlon was paired up with the eight other GIs from Florida back at the base. (11: 93)

Marlon is forced by the platoon to share the contraband vodka Bab’s smuggled to him.  Relaxed by the alcohol’s effects, Marlon and his fellow soldiers soon become friends. (12: 96-97)

  • While Marlon shares his vodka with Tex and the other soldiers, a “harvest moon” can be seen in the night sky.  Although it makes for good literary imagery, a harvest moon (in the northern hemisphere) is the full moon occurring closest in time to the autumn equinox.  Since it is established Marlon is in Kosovo roughly a “month” before his “May” inauguration as Florida’s next governor, the full moon in the sky cannot be, by definition, a harvest moon.  It is assumed the full moon mentioned in this scene is the one which is present in the sky on the evening of Friday, April 26, 2002. (12: 97)

                                                   SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2002

Marlon’s platoon comes under attack by Serbians.  Zapata, Marconi and Schwartz are killed, but Tex manages to lead Marlon and the others to safety inside an abandoned farmhouse. (12: 97-101)

  • Marlon and the other GIs decamp “at dawn”. (12: 97)
  • After coming under attack by the Serbian civilian police, Marlon and his men make camp outside of Suva Prizka “at nightfall”. (12: 101)

Governor Birch uses his influence to have Marlon’s platoon evacuated. (12: 101-102)

  • There is no word about Marlon’s fate for “three days”.  “On the fourth day, the evening newscasts back in the States were dominated by surprise Serb offensive and sketchy reports of American casualties”.  It is at this point in which Governor Birch puts pressure on the military to locate and extract Marlon. (12: 101)

                                                      SUNDAY, APRIL 28, 2002

Marlon and the remainder of the platoon enter Suva Prizka but come under attack by the Serbian police.  During the firefight, Washington, Kluzinski and Tex sacrifice themselves to protect the platoon.  Inspired by their bravery, Marlon selflessly tries to protect the villagers from the Serbians.  As the police prepare to execute Marlon, an American gunship suddenly appears and mows down the enemy forces. (12: 102-105)

  • Marlon and the remainder of the platoon arrive at the edge of Suva Prizka “at noon”. (12: 102)

                                                        TUESDAY, MAY 7, 2002

Marlon returns to Tallahassee to a hero’s welcome. (13: 106-108)

  • The fact both “Time and Newsweek” feature the Reuters photographer’s picture of Marlon defending the villagers in Suva Prizka on their magazine covers indicates roughly a week passes between Marlon’s rescue and his return to Florida. (13: 106)

                                                     WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2002

Concerned over Marlon’s sudden change in personality, Escrow insists on accompanying him to Clewiston to pay respects to Tex’s widow. (13: 108-111)

  • The “next morning” after his return to Tallahassee, Marlon sets off to visit the family members of his fallen comrades. (13: 108)
  • While protesting Marlon’s decision to visit the families of his fallen comrades, Escrow mentions his boss has “a month of appointments stacked up”.  This indicates Marlon was in Kosovo for about a month. (13: 108)
  • Marlon and Escrow leave Inez Jackson’s home “just before midnight”. (13: 111)

                                                 SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2002

While attending Perry’s pre-debate party, Marlon meets Elizabeth Sinclair. Elsewhere at the party, the Bumper Sticker Killer seduces Perry’s protégé, Todd Vanderbilt.

During the debate, Marlon’s thoughtful answer to whether Florida was correct in bringing back the electric chair is overshadowed by Tatum’s rousing endorsement for the controversial method of execution. (P: 1-13)

  • The headline about Todd’s murder is printed “three weeks” before the 2002 Florida gubernatorial election. (P: 1)
  • The gubernatorial debate in Tallahassee occurs on a “balmy October evening in 2002”. (P: 1)
  • There are “three weeks left in the campaign” at the conclusion of the debate in Tallahassee. (P: 13)

Tatum is unanimously hailed as the winner of the debate. Meanwhile, the Bumper Sticker Killer sabotages Todd’s cellphone with plastic explosives. (18: 134-135)

                                                   TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2002

  • “Hours later, after sunset”, the Orange Crush drives south from St. Augustine. (21: 151)
  • “The moon had just risen over the Atlantic” as the Orange Crush drives south from St. Augustine.  On the night of Tuesday, October 15, 2002 the moon was in its waxing gibbous phase. (21: 152)

  • The Florida state troopers deliver the mail to the Orange Crush the “first thing the next morning”. (22: 155)
  • The Herald’s headlines are devoted to Marlon’s campaign and “the Willie Nelson Bandit”.  Since the Willie Nelson Bandit’s murder is back in the news, six-and-a-half months after it was committed, it is assumed there is a new development in the homicide case. (22: 155)

On the way to Daytona Beach, Pimento confides to Marlon that he is suffering from amnesia.  During the debate at the Speedway, Marlon uses his allotted time to give an inspirational speech about Mary McLeod Bethune. (23: 161-167)

  • Pimento states, “For months, the only thing I could remember was all these history facts and trivia”.  He continues by saying, “But recently I’ve started to have these little flashbacks”. (23: 162)
  • The third gubernatorial debate is “set for nine at the Speedway”. (23: 164)

                                                  THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2002

The young woman finally breaks her silence and tells Marlon her name is Jenny. (23: 167)

  • The Orange Crush passes through Titusville just “after midnight”. (23: 167)

In Vero Beach, Marlon accidentally walks in on Jenny while she is changing clothes, and sees her entire backside is covered in scars.  Mortified, Jenny balls herself up in the corner and slips back into her shell.  Desperate to find someone to help him with Jenny’s fragile state, Marlon calls Elizabeth and asks her to join him on the campaign trail.

While Marlon is dealing with Jenny, Escrow stops by Vista Isles East.  Posing as a member of the Tatum campaign, Escrow berates the retirees for being a drain on society.  Meanwhile, Pimento attends a time-share seminar, and ends up head-butting the high-pressure salesman.

Elizabeth joins the gang aboard the Orange Crush.  They take Jenny to a psychiatrist Elizabeth knows in Palm Beach.  The psychiatrist concludes Jenny is suffering from a past trauma, and the best chance of her snapping out of it is to remain aboard the Orange Crush. (24: 168-176)

  • Marlon wakes up Pimento and Escrow at “eight o’clock” A.M. (24: 168)
  • Escrow visits the retirees at Vista Isles East during their “regular Thursday-morning installment of Canasta-Mania”. The fact it is “Thursday” means the debate at the Daytona International Speedway took place on a Wednesday; the Jacksonville debate took place on a Monday; and the first gubernatorial debate at East Tallahassee High School occurred on a Sunday. (24: 170)
  • When Pimento and Escrow return to the motel, Marlon is watching the “evening news”. (24: 172)
  • Marlon calls Elizabeth for help shortly after “noon”. (24: 174)
  • The fact Elizabeth is “no longer with” Belvedere and Associates is a bit circumspect.  Only four days have passed since she was seen working for Perry during the night of the first gubernatorial debate.  Most likely, Elizabeth quit her job the following day after the debate. (24: 174)
  • It is “after dark” when the Orange Crush meets Elizabeth at West Palm International Airport. (24: 175)

Mahoney concludes the Bumper Sticker Killer’s crimes will inspire copycat killings. (25: 177-179)

                                                     SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2002

Pimento invites Ned to film a documentary about Marlon’s unconventional campaign. (27: 191-192)

  • Ned states it will be “a couple of days” before he can join them on the campaign trail. (27: 192)

Von Zeppelin’s blimp is shot down by a disgruntled Felons fan. (26: 182-184)

  • “By late October” the Florida Felons were on a “ten-game losing skid”.  Since the NFL’s Week 10 doesn’t occur until Sunday, November 10, 2002, the Felons’ losing streak must either include preseason games or games from the previous 2001 regular season. (26: 182)
  • The Florida Felons are playing the New Orleans “Saints” the day von Zeppelin’s blimp crashes.  Unfortunately, for the sake of the timeline, the only bye week the Saints had in 2002 occurred on Sunday, November 3, 2002. (26: 182)
  • At “4:37 P.M.” von Zeppelin’s blimp crosses into Disney World’s airspace.  Therefore, the game against the Felons and the Saints must be a day game. (26: 183)

                                                  WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2002

DAY-TRADR tails the Orange Crush down Interstate 95.  Blaine Crease, once again trying to get an exclusive interview with Marlon, is lowered on Orange Crush’s roof via helicopter.  Blaine loses his balance and lands on DAY-TRADR’s windshield. (28: 193-196)

  • Although it is stated it is the “next morning” after the gang’s visit to Eagle Studios, it is assumed more than one day has passed, since Marlon’s campaign commercial is already airing on television. (28: 193)
  • Blaine Crease attempts to land on the roof of the Orange Crush during “morning traffic on I-95”. (28: 193)
  • At this point along the campaign trail, Marlon has already visited “places that had never seen a candidate: inner cities, rural trailer parks, even a prison”.  Marlon has also visited “kids in hospitals and AIDS patients in hospices and the bedridden in nursing homes and the homeless at roadside”.  And, at one point, Elizabeth and Jenny “found Marlon asleep in a running shower one night and again the next day, slumped over a slide-out desktop in the back of the Winnebago”.  This would seem to indicate more time has passed on the campaign trail than is indicated by the text of this novel. (28: 196)

Von Zeppelin calls Marlon for a political favor, but Marlon refuses.  The Orange Crush arrives at a migrant labor camp, only to find it being raided by immigration agents.  Marlon attempts to intervene and is briefly arrested. (28: 197-198)

After an unproductive interview with Sirocco, Butts concludes Sirocco would rather be executed than risk his daughter being publicly humiliated. (31: 213)

                                                     SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2002

Marlon puts a stop to a local sheriff’s practice of having his deputies target minority drivers for traffic stops.  Meanwhile, Escrow covertly acquires Pimento’s fingerprints from an empty soda can.  Elizabeth suddenly realizes Jenny is Jenny Springs, a young tennis star who inexplicitly disappeared years ago. (30: 205-208)

  • After “another long day” on the campaign trail, the Orange Crush enters (the fictional) Atlantic County around “two in the morning”. (30: 205)

During their meeting at the Pier Sixty-Six hotel, Marlon rejects Dempsey and Perry’s advice against getting on von Zeppelin’s bad side. (30: 208-211)

  • The sun is “rising” as the Orange Crush arrives in Fort Lauderdale. (30: 209)

Butts tells Marlon that Sirocco murdered George Braintree because his daughter had been raped by Braintree.  Marlon learns Escrow somehow tricked him into signing Sirocco’s execution order. (31: 212)

  • Butts has an “afternoon” meeting with Marlon. (31: 212)

Desperate to end his ‘average man’ curse, Joe Blow adopts new, unconventional lifestyle choices.  Unfortunately for him, his new lifestyle is inexplicably adopted by the majority of the country. (30: 204-205)

  • “The next day” after getting ambushed by the media, Joe Blow decides to put an end to his ‘average man’ reputation by getting an electric car, paying off his credit cards, etc. (30: 204)

  • It is “ten P.M.” when Elizabeth receives the phone call trying to lure her away from Marlon’s campaign. (31: 213)
  • “An hour” after getting the job offer, Elizabeth hears Marlon having a nightmare. (31: 215)

                                                   MONDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2002

Elizabeth and Marlon have sex.  Downstairs, Babs shows up at the hotel to confront her fiancée about Jenny’s presence aboard the Orange Crush.  She is intercepted by Pimento, who invites her back to his room.  Finding they are attracted to one another; Pimento and Babs have sex. (31: 216-219)

  • Marlon is awoken at “two A.M.” by Elizabeth kissing him. (31: 216)

During breakfast, Jenny is invited to play in the upcoming Miami Cup tennis tournament.  Ned joins Marlon and the others as they prepare for another day on the campaign trail. (32: 220-221)

  • Although it is still the same day which Babs shows up to Pier Sixty-Six, the “next morning” Jenny is invited to participate in the Miami Cup. (32: 220)

  • It is a “hot, quiet afternoon” when the Orange Crush enters Miami. (32: 223)
  • Escrow informs Marlon he has a book-signing at “noon”. (32: 224)

As the gang watches Jenny’s tennis match, DAY-TRADR slips into a maintenance room above the Miami Arena floor and aims his sniper rifle at Marlon.  A mysterious figure suddenly bursts into the maintenance room and bludgeons DAY-TRADR to death. (33: 227-231)

  • Jenny’s final match against Tanya Svenson begins at “four P.M.”. (33: 227)
  • The fact “Jenny easily disposed of her earlier opponents in an impressive string of six-love matches” indicates she has been playing in the tournament for a few days.  The commentators also make mention of the fact “today’s match won’t be anywhere near as easy” for Jenny. (33: 227)
  • The commentators wonder if Jenny can “handle the intense media onslaught she’s been subjected to all week”.  They also comment that Jenny’s story “has had people buzzing all week”.  This further confirms she has been participating in the tournament for a few days. (33: 228)

Mahoney deduces DAY-TRADR’s murder was the work of a copycat killer. (33: 231-232)

  • Mahoney arrives at the Miami Arena “six hours” after the end of Jenny and Tanya’s tennis match. (33: 231)

                                                 SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2002

Thinking Marlon jilted his daughter, Perry tracks down the Orange Crush.  As Perry enters the RV Park, Pimento suddenly awakes and slips out of the Orange Crush. (34: 238-239)

  • Pimento suddenly wakes up “a little after two” A.M. (34: 238)

Mahoney investigates Perry’s murder.  Meanwhile, Marlon publicly apologizes for Escrow recent deception of pretending to be a member of the Tatum campaign. (34: 239-246)

  • The Orange Crush drives past the Edison Museum “the next morning”. (34: 239)
  • The Orange Crush arrives at Vista Isles West “shortly after two” P.M. (34: 243)
  • While addressing the residents of Vista Isles West, Marlon apologizes for Escrow’s dirty trick “last week” of pretending to be a member of the Tatum campaign.  Working backwards from Election Day, Marlon’s apology occurs on Sunday, November 3, 2002, which is more than a “week” after Escrow’s ruse at Vista Isles East on Thursday, October 17, 2002.  Marlon’s error can be chalked-up to the hectic nature of the campaign trail. • Sirocco’s execution is scheduled for “tonight”. (35: 250)

Joe Blow vows to do something so shocking, no one will ever accuse him of being ‘average’ again. (35: 248)

At the WWF event at Tampa’s Ice Palace, Pimento - calling himself ‘The Florida Phantom’ - jumps into the ring and accepts Tatum’s challenge in Marlon’s stead.  The wrestling match quickly devolves into a melee, with both Jackie and Babs entering the ring.  Pimento and Babs emerge victorious.

Meanwhile, von Zeppelin takes aim at Marlon in the crowd below from a storage room overlooking the arena.  Before von Zeppelin can pull the trigger, ‘The Florida Phantom’ bursts into the room and kills him. Hours later, Mahoney arrives at the Ice Palace and determines von Zeppelin was murdered by the same the copycat who killed DAY-TRADR and Perry. (36: 254-265)

Serge's Flashbacks

                                                       (in order of appearance)

  • This occurs at some point in Serge’s childhood (perhaps more than once).

Serge’s parents take him to the rotating restaurant atop the Pier Sixty-Six hotel. (30: 210)

  • This occurs at some point in Serge’s childhood, probably when his father,

               Pablo, was still alive.

Chapter Notes and Vital Trivia

NOTE: Pages listed are from the hardcover edition

PROLOGUE

(pg 0)   Orange Crush was published on Tuesday, July 3, 2001.

(pg 11)  Governor Marlon Conrad is “thirty-eight years old” at the time of the

gubernatorial debate at East Tallahassee High School.

(pg 13)  Mahoney is currently a homicide detective with the “Miami Metro-Dade” police

               department.

CHAPTER 1

* No Notes

CHAPTER 2

(pg 22)  Marlon joined the University of Florida’s secret society the “Blue Key

Society”. Although it is hardly an “ultrasecret cabal of hardworking students”,

the Florida Blue Key honor society is renowned for having numerous Florida

politicians and businessmen among its alumni.

(pg 23)  As “Marlon entered his mid-thirties, the leisure slacked off”.  This occurred in the

late 1990s and was in preparation for his bid for lieutenant governor.

(pg 24)  The “opening day” of the Florida legislature in 1999 was on Tuesday,

                March 2, 1999.

(pg 25)  “Representative Boley “Bo” Bodacious” should not be confused with Bolly “Bo”

Bodine, the Florida legislature committee chairman seen in Coconut Cowboy

                (39: 248).

(pg 27)  Marlon plays golf at the Breakers with “future governor Horace Birch”.  Therefore,

he plays golf there sometime before the election on Tuesday, November 3, 1998.

CHAPTER 3

* No Notes

CHAPTER 4

(pg 33)  “Colonel Klink” is a reference to Colonel Wilhelm Klink, the inept commandant of

                Stalag 13 in Hogan’s Heroes.

CHAPTER 5

(pg 41)  Gomer Tatum is the “speaker of the house” when he meets Jackie for the first

time at Perry’s party in the “middle of the 2000 legislative session”.

CHAPTER 6

(pg 48)  Jack Pimento is “Press Secretary” at the time Marlon and Escrow barricade

                 themselves in the office.

(pg 51)  Pimento (Serge Storms) is described as a “Rockefeller Republican who believed

the interests of the lower class were tied to a properly regulated pro-business

climate”.  In Tiger Shrimp Tango (25: 222), Serge tells the staffer from the Miami

Republican Party office his political leanings are “more Libertarian” than

               Republican.

(pg 52)  At the time of Pimento’s report on the death penalty, Sirocco is “set for execution

in a few months”.  Contrary to the plot of this novel, the last death row inmate to

be executed in Florida by the electric chair was Allen Lee Davis on Thursday,

July 8, 1999.  From that point forward, all executions in Florida have been

                performed with lethal injection.

CHAPTER 7

(pg 54)  “Old Sparky” is the nickname given to the electric chairs of numerous states –

Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, New York,

Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

(pg 54)  “Yellow Mama” is the nickname for Alabama’s electric chair.

(pg 54)  Indiana’s electric chair is nicknamed Old Betsy, not “the Indiana Shit-Boiler”.

(pg 55)  James C. Smith is the candidate in the “Republican gubernatorial primary in

1994” who “bragged in a TV ad that as attorney general he had helped kill

Spenkelink”.  At the time of his tenure as attorney general, Smith was a

                Democrat.

(pg 57)  George Braintree disappeared on the day the “Miami Dolphins had just kicked

off to the New England Patriots in a blizzard in Foxboro, Massachusetts” in

“December 1989”.  Unfortunately, although the Dolphins did, in fact, play the

Patriots on Sunday, December 10, 1989, the game was played in Miami at Pro

                Player Stadium.

(pg 58)  It is stated the “Dolphins beat the Patriots seventeen to fourteen”.  The Dolphins

beat the Patriots thirty-one to ten in the game played on Sunday, December 10,

                1989.

(pg 60)  Anita Braintree “moved in” with Frank Sirocco “a month” after her husband,

George’s disappearance.  Anita and Frank Sirocco married “the following June”.

Therefore, their wedding was in June 1990.

(pg 61)  George Braintree’s corpse was found in “January” 1991.

(pg 61)  Sirocco was arrested “a week later” for George’s murder.

(pg 62)  After a “three-day trial in Key West”, Sirocco was found guilty of George’s murder.

(pg 63)  Although it is said he felt his fellow inmate, Sirocco, was “creepy”, “Ted Bundy”

was already dead by the time Sirocco was admitted into the Union Correctional

Institution in Raiford.  Bundy was executed by electric chair on Tuesday,

                January 24, 1989.

CHAPTER 8

(pg 68) Pimento (Serge) has traces of “lithium and Elavil” in his system.  Lithium is

prescribed to treat episodes of mania in people with bi-polar disorder.

Amitriptyline hydrochloride (Elavil) is prescribed to combat major depressive

disorders in patients.  In Florida Roadkill (5: 60), he was on “Prozac, Zoloft, Elavil

                and lithium”.

(pg 69)  Pimento wrote Governor Birch’s “State of the State Address.”  Governor Jeb Bush

delivered his State of the State Address on Tuesday, January 22, 2002.

(pg 70)  Pimento has been experiencing vague memories of “a chainsaw and severed

fingers” and the “World Series”.  These memories are references to Florida

Roadkill and are the first clues to the reader that Jack Pimento is, in fact,

                Serge Storms.

CHAPTER 10

(pg 79)  Since the Florida Felons are said to play against both “Pittsburg Steelers” (4: 36)

and the “Cowboys”, it is unclear if the Felons are a member of the American

Football Conference or the National Football Conference.  They also later play

the Washington “Redskins” (26: 182) and the New Orleans “Saints” (26: 182)

                – both of which are also NFC teams.  Most likely, the Florida Felons are intended

to be an NFC team, and only played the AFC Steelers during a pre-season

                exhibition game.

CHAPTER 11

(pg 83)  As Loco Benny and his bodyguards arrive at the Rash, “Puff Daddy and gal pal

Jennifer Lopez” are also seen entering the nightclub.  Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs

and Jennifer Lopez began dating in September 1999 and ended their

relationship in February 2001.  Therefore, their appearance together at the

Rash must be purely platonic due to the fact Loco Benny’s arrival at the Rash,

and his subsequent murder later that night, occur shortly before Marlon’s

reserve unit is called up in April 2002.

(pg 86)  Detective Mahoney’s Zippo is inscribed with the name “Mabel”.  It is revealed in

Electric Barracuda (15: 144) his adoptive mother is Mabel Mahoney.

(pg 91)  At the White House press briefing, there is a female veteran “correspondent for

UPI” among the group of reporters.  It is stated United Press International “hadn’t

existed for years” and nobody had the heart to break the news of this to the

elderly reporter.  Although UPI had gone through a series of ownership changes

over the years, the news agency was (and still is to this day) in existence in 2002.

The elderly female reporter is most likely meant to be perennial White House

press briefing attendant, Helen Thomas.  Thomas resigned from UPI the day

after the company was purchased by Reverend Moon’s Unification Church in

               May 2000.

CHAPTER 12

(pg 97-98)  Marlon’s platoon is ordered to “head northeast through Štimlje and across

                       the Sitnica River”.

CHAPTER 13

(pg 110)  Gaskins’ “Cypress Knee Museum” opened in 1938 and remained open until it

was burglarized in June 2000.  Tom Gaskins, Sr. ran the museum until he

retired and handed the operation over to his son, Tom, Jr.  Tom Sr. passed

away on Saturday, May 2, 1998.

CHAPTER 14

(pg 116)  Marlon is Florida’s “forty-third governor.”  In real life, John “Jeb” Bush was the

forty-third governor and was elected to the position on Tuesday, November 3,

1998. Bush was reelected on Tuesday, November 5, 2002.

(pg 116)  Florida political trivia:  In the 1998 election, Lieutenant-Governor Kenneth

“Buddy” Mackay ran against Jeb Bush to become the state’s forty-second

governor.  Although he lost the November election to Bush, in a tragic twist of

fate, Mackay still managed to become Florida’s forty-second governor after

incumbent Governor Lawton Chiles passed away on Saturday, December 12,

1998.  Since Governor Chiles died in office weeks before Bush was sworn in, the

responsibility to finish Chiles’ term in office befell upon Mackay.

CHAPTER 15

(pg 122)  Despite the fact Majority Whip “J.J. Weathervane” went to “federal camp for the

summer” (5: 43), the legislator is present for Marlon’s special legislative session.

CHAPTER 16

(pg 124)  “Jack Savage” – a thinly-veiled parody of Charlton Heston - was previously seen

on billboards advertising the Vista Isles retirement community in

                  Florida Roadkill (7: 82).

(pg 125)  Pimento reads in the newspaper that Alabama’s legislature has “banned

dildos”.  This is the state’s Anti-Obscenity Enforcement Act, which was passed

                 in 1998.

CHAPTER 17

(pg 128)  Detective Mahoney currently has a “wife”.  This is apparently not his first wife; in

Triggerfish Twist (13: 81) it is revealed he keeps tabs of his “ex-wives” using

“push-pins” on a “big map of the United States”.

CHAPTER 18

(pg 137)  The fact Pimento drove Marlon “across town”, coupled with the fact there was

“nothing but oak trees and tombstones” at Lawton Chiles’ gravesite, indicates

their destination was Roselawn Cemetery.  Governor Chiles was originally

buried in the cemetery after his death on Saturday, December 12, 1998.  His

gravesite was on Block H, in the southeast section of the cemetery.  However,

by 2002, his family had moved his body to a private cemetery on their estate,

                  Jubilee.

CHAPTER 19

(pg 139)  The Orange Crush “had previously been traded in following a country music

tour sponsored by a soft drink bottler”.

CHAPTER 20

* No Notes

CHAPTER 21

(pg 147)  The Orange Crush is driving “on A1A south of Jacksonville” when Blaine Crease’s

news helicopter catches up to it.

(pg 150)  The first settlement in “Pensacola” was founded on Saturday, August 15, 1559 by

Don Tristán de Luna y Arellano.  However, the settlement of over one thousand

Spanish settlers was decimated by a hurricane on Saturday, September 19, 1559.

By 1561, the settlement had been abandoned by the fifty or so remaining

settlers because of the determination by the Spanish Viceroy in Mexico (and

his advisors) the Florida Panhandle was too dangerous to settle.  It wasn’t until

1719 that Spain reconsidered its position towards the Florida Panhandle and

built the Presidio Santa Maria de Galve on the location which is currently

Pensacola.  This hundred and fifty-eight-year (1591 to 1719) hiatus prevents

Pensacola from being honored with the title of being the oldest contiguous

settlement.  Conversely, “St. Augustine” (or San Agustin) was founded on

September 1565 by Spanish admiral, Pedro Menéndez de Alivés, and its

                  existence was never interrupted.

CHAPTER 22

* No Notes

CHAPTER 23

(pg 167)  As the Orange Crush drives past the Kennedy Space Center, Pimento points to

the space shuttle “Endeavour” in the distance.  This is entirely possible, given

the fact the Endeavour was scheduled to launch for the STS-113 mission to the

International Space Station on Saturday, November 23, 2002.  However, this

would mean Pimento misidentifies the launch pad as “Thirty-nine-B”, since

Endeavour’s launch took place on Thirty-nine-A.

CHAPTER 24

(pg 170)  “Puerto Lago Boca Vista Isles East” is the twin retirement community of Puerto

Lago Boca Vista Isles West, which was shown in Florida Roadkill and

                  Hammerhead Ranch Motel.

(pg 171)  Pimento (Serge) is described as “fortyish”, “on the thin side, with blue eyes and

short hair that had touches of gray at the temples”.  Florida Roadkill (5: 57)

establishes he was born “the first week of October 1962”.  However, Triggerfish

Twist (12: 72) states he was born during the “Cuban Missile Crisis”, which lasted

from Monday, October 15, 1962 to Sunday, October 28, 1962.  Therefore, Serge

has his fortieth birthday sometime just prior to the first debate in Tallahassee or

around the beginning of the Orange Crush’s tour of Florida.

(pg 174)  Marlon takes “Exit 51” off Interstate 95 to reach Palm Beach International

Airport.  This is a typographical error, and should be Exit 69 B.  Exit 51 is the

                  exit for Delray Beach.

CHAPTER 25

(pg 177)  The Gulfstream Inn is the motel on Biscayne Boulevard where Mahoney is

staying.  The seedy motel is described as having “three stories” and the first

floor was “taken up by the Sailfish Diner”.

(pg 177)  Mahoney smokes “Chesterfield” cigarettes.

(pg 177)  Mahoney’s file on Serge lists him as a “suspect in several murder cases,

including two at the 1997 World Series”.  This is a reference to the murders of

Sharon Rhodes and the ticket scalper in Florida Roadkill.

(pg 178)  Mahoney had once tracked Serge down “to a rental home on Triggerfish Lane

in Tampa”.  This is a reference to (the upcoming) Triggerfish Twist.

(pg 178 )  Serge’s victims are “mostly dirtballs, scam artists and predators”.

(pg 178)  During his extensive manhunt for Serge, Mahoney has found “people who

revered Serge like a folk hero, a tropical D.B. Cooper”.

(pg 178)  The Florida authors Serge has suggested to Mahoney are: Charles “Willeford”,

                  the father of Florida crime fiction; John D. “MacDonald”, of Travis McGee fame;

Edna “Buchanan”, Pulitzer Prize-winning Miami crime-journalist and author of

both fiction and non-fiction; and Caroline “Garcia-Agulera”, Cuban-born creator

                  of the Lupe Solano series.

(pg 178)  The news anchor Mahoney is watching on TV is the first to dub the mysterious

homicides as “the Bumper Sticker Murders”.

CHAPTER 26

(pg 182)  The Goodyear “backup” blimp von Zeppelin purchases is referred to as a

“zeppelin”.  While both are airships, they are distinctively different.  Zeppelins

have a rigid internal frame – usually metal - which keeps their form, while

blimps use internal air pressure to maintain their shape.

(pg 182)  The Felons played the Washington “Redskins” the week before von Zeppelin’s

blimp crashed.  It is during that game a fan firebombed von Zeppelin’s skybox.

CHAPTER 27

(pg 188)  The fact Ned’s penthouse office is on the “fiftieth floor on Collins Avenue in

Miami Beach” indicates the building is completely fictional.  In 2002,  the

Blue and Green Diamond twin towers were the tallest in Miami Beach, each

                  containing forty-four floors.

(pg 188)  Ned can look “south” and see “the art deco jewels Delano and Dilido” from his

Collins Avenue penthouse, which indicates his office is located north of

                  17th Street.

CHAPTER 28

(pg 195)  During Crease’s attempt to land on the Orange Crush’s roof, Marlon comments

on how he hates “driving in Broward County”.

(pg 196)  Marlon “has been putting in eighteen-hour days” while on the campaign trail.

CHAPTER 29

(pg 200)  Although it occurred in 1935, not “1934”, Hemingway did, in fact, accidentally

shoot himself while on a fishing trip.  While gaffing a shark, the author fired his

.22 pistol.  The bullet ricocheted and struck both his calves.

CHAPTER 30

(pg 204)  Joe Blow buys an “electric car”.  Most likely, he purchased (or leased) a

Ford Think City, as it was the only electric car on the market in 2002.  Although

the Toyota RAV 4 EV had been available for businesses, governments and

utilities since 2001, it was not made available to the public until 2003.

(pg 208)  After pressuring Sheriff Corrigador into ordering his men to cease targeting

minority drivers, Marlon drives the Orange Crush “south on U.S. 1”.  Therefore,

U.S. Highway 1 passes through the fictional Atlantic County.

(pg 210)  Entering the revolving restaurant atop the Pier Sixty-Six Hotel and vaguely

feeling as if he had been there before, Pimento muses “my folks must have

brought be up here when I was a kid”.

CHAPTER 31

(pg 215)  Marlon is “ten years younger” than Elizabeth.  Marlon is said to be “thirty-eight

years old” (P: 11).  This would make Elizabeth forty-eight years old.

(pg 218)  Pimento makes the comment, “The judge threw out Xavier Suárez’s victory in

the Miami mayoral race”.  On Tuesday, November 4, 1997, incumbent Joe

Carollo, former mayor Xavier Suárez, and three other candidates were on the

ballot in the Miami mayoral election.  Since none of the five candidates

received the required fifty-one percent of the vote, a special runoff election

between Suárez and Mayor Carollo was scheduled for Thursday, November 13,

1997.  Suárez seemingly won the runoff and became the city’s next mayor.

However, evidence of voter fraud on the part of the Suárez campaign soon

emerged.  It was discovered the fraudulent votes Suárez got in the primary

election were the reason none of the five candidates received a fifty-one

percent plurality.  On Wednesday, March 4, 1998, Circuit Judge Thomas S.

Wilson, Jr. ruled the runoff election was invalid.  As a result, Carollo was

named the winner of the primary and was reinstated as Miami’s mayor on

                  Thursday, March 12, 1998.

CHAPTER 32

CHAPTER 33

(pg 227)  Legendary tennis coach Nick Bollettieri’s last name is misspelled “Boleterri”.

(pg 227)  Jenny “hasn’t played or even been heard from since she was a fourteen-year-

old phenom” which was “eight years ago”.  Jenny is confirmed as being

                  “twenty-two” years old.

CHAPTER 34

(pg 233)  As the Orange Crush passes by the Miccosukee Resort & Gaming casino,

Marlon asks, “When did that go up?”.  The casino opened in 1999.

(pg 235)  Arriving in Naples, the Orange Crush makes a pit-stop at “Addiction World”.

This fictional convenience store chain was last seen in Florida Roadkill.

(pg 235)  A family of tourists visiting Addiction World are shown with a “Slurpee”.  Slurpee

is a brand name of 7-Eleven and its subsidiaries.  Therefore, it is likely Addiction

World is a fictional subsidiary of the convenience store chain.

(pg 241)  When the Orange Crush drives past the Edison Museum, Pimento mentions,

“for some odd reason I feel like I’ve already been here”.  In fact, he was there,

just hours before when he murdered Perry.  The fact he fails to remember he

killed Perry indicates Serge has not fully recovered from his amnesia.

(pg 243)  While they are at Sarasota High School, Marlon comments Vista Isles West is

just to the “north”.  To reach the retirement community, Marlon exits

“Interstate 75 near a factory outlet mall”.  This mall is likely Prime Outlets

Ellenton (currently named Ellenton Premium Outlets), which is off Exit 224

in Ellenton.  Therefore, it is assumed Vista Isles West is in or near Ellenton, FL,

and likely just off U.S. Highway 301.

CHAPTER 35

CHAPTER 36

(pg 255)  Major Banks tells Escrow, “unarmed”, Serge “took out a three-man hit squad all

by himself”.  This is a reference to Serge’s encounter with the Costa Gordan

                   hitmen in Florida Roadkill.

(pg 255)  Major Banks describes Serge as “lean, six feet tall, ice blue eyes”.

(pg 255)  Major Banks states the FDLE lost Serge’s trail “in Cocoa Beach a couple years

back”.  This is most likely a reference to (not-yet-published) The Stingray Shuffle.

(pg 255)  Major Banks confirms Serge is a “borderline genius and totally insane”.

(pg 258)  Pimento (Serge) weighs in at “one hundred and sixty pounds”.

(pg 258)  The wrestling match marks the time during which Pimento is in, “both legal

and clinical definitions, completely unhinged”.  Therefore, for all intents and

purposes, by the time the match takes place, Pimento has realized he is, in

                   fact, Serge A. Storms.

(pg 260)  On Sunday, May 5, 2002 the “WWF” changed its name to the World Wrestling

Entertainment, Inc. (WWE) to avoid further legal conflicts with the World

                  Wildlife Foundation.

(pg 260)  In reality, the Monday, November 4, 2002 edition of Monday Night RAW was

filmed at the Fleet Center in Boston, MA.

(pg 260)  The “Mean Street Posse” had already been released from the WWE by the time

this fictional Raw Is War event took place.

(pg 260)  On Sunday, August 25, 2002, WWE announced “X-Pac” (A.K.A. Sean Waltman)

was no longer with the organization.

(pg 263)  Sadly, “the British Bulldog” (A.K.A. David “Davey” Boy Smith) passed away from

heart failure on Saturday, May 18, 2002.  His death, unfortunately, happened

months before this novel’s fictional Raw Is War wrestling match is said to have

                  occurred.

CHAPTER 37

(pg 269)  Escrow removes the “distributor wires” from the Orange Crush.  This might be a

clue to the age of the Winnebago, as the company transitioned to fully

electronic ignition engines and electronic fuel injection systems in 1990.

CHAPTER 38

(pg 273)  Serge gives himself a “Mohawk” haircut.  He also stands in front of the mirror

and says, “You talkin’ to me!  You talkin’ to me!  You talkin’ to me!”.  Both are

homages to Robert De Niro’s character in the film Taxi Driver.

CHAPTER 39

(pg 277)  Serge gives the alias of “Travis Bickle” to the security guard.  This is the name of

Robert De Niro’s character in the film Taxi Driver.

(pg 278)  Henry B. Plant High School is the “high school in Tampa” Stephen Stills

                   attended.

CHAPTER 40

(pg 285)  Serge and the Bumper Sticker Killer “arrived in Miami an hour after sunset”.

At some point after this scene, Serge reunites with Lenny Lippowicz.  Lenny is

                  next seen in Cadillac Beach.

EPILOGUE

(pg 290)  Sometime after the election, Ned’s film, The Last Campaign, is released and

becomes a sleeper hit.  “In the summer, it was rereleased” and “featured new

footage at the end, showing what had happened to all the characters since

                   the election”.

(pg 291)  During the time between the 2002 election and the summer of 2003,

Mahoney’s wife “took him back” and threw him out again “three more times”.

(pg 291)  At some point between the 2002 election and the summer of 2003, Mahoney

“resigned” from the Miami-Dade Metro Police.

(pg 291)  At the time of the filming of the new footage for The Last Campaign, Mahoney

“currently resided in an efficiency apartment over the Biscayne Boulevard

pawnshop he was managing”.  At some point between this update on

Mahoney’s life and his viewing the Academy Awards in this scene, Mahoney

suffers a mental breakdown, which leads to his temporary institutionalization

at the Miami-Dade Mental Health facility, as seen in Cadillac Beach.

(pg 292)  In real life, “Billy Crystal” did host the Seventy-sixth Academy Awards.

(pg 292)  “Serge” appears at the Academy Awards about a month-and-a-half after the

conclusion of Cadillac Beach.  About a month and a half after the Academy

Awards, Serge heads down to the Florida Keys in Torpedo Juice.

(pg 292)  Mahoney is “in Miami” when he spots Serge on the television at the Academy

Awards.  Like Serge, Mahoney’s appearance in this scene comes after his

appearance Cadillac Beach.  Therefore, shortly after the events in Cadillac

Beach, Mahoney must have been released from the Miami-Dade Mental Health

facility and took the job running the pawn shop.
